Vehicle Registration Certificate (V5C) - the logbook (preferred)
New Keeper Slip (V5C/2) - the green slip from the logbook
Certificate of Entitlement (V750) - for new private registrations
Retention Document (V778) - if your plate is on retention
How do I transfer a private plate to my new car?
1. Apply to the DVLA to remove the plate from your current vehicle (you'll receive a V778 Retention Document)
2. Pay the £80 DVLA transfer fee
3. Apply to assign the registration to your new vehicle
4. Receive updated V5C documents
5. Get new physical plates made
How long can I keep a private plate without using it?
Private plates can be held on a V778 Retention Document or V750 Certificate of Entitlement for up to 10 years.
You can renew before expiry to extend this period.
